A History of the Institutional Expansion and Growth of K. C. College Looking back as we go forward……

Kishinchand Chellaram College was established in 1954 under the aegis of the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board, H(S)NCBoard. It was the second institution that the Management set up in Bombay after it relocated itself in the city, following the aftermath of Partition.

The establishment of this college epitomises the positive side of Partition of India in 1947. The instituting of K.C. and the history of the Board speaks not only of the entrepreneurial spirit of the Sindhi community but also its deep-rooted sense of nationalism. Support for the establishment of the college was garnered from the globally scattered Sindhi community, particularly the Kishinchand Chellaram family, after whom the college was named and the Watumulls, who dedicated the ground floor auditorium to the memory of their son, Rama Watumull.

The tribute for the establishment of the college goes to the late founders, Principal K.M. Kundnani and Barrister Hotchand Advani, each of whom with his own expertise helped set up K.C. College as well as several other educational institutions.

Students had been admitted to the college from June 1, 1954 but a formal inauguration of the college was performed by Shri Morarji Desai, (the then Chief Minister of Bombay), on August 15 of the same year. KC’s first batch comprised 1800 students and within three years the numbers swelled threefold. Thus K.C. made its remarkable entry into the educational arena and soon became a center of educational activity.

The college today has some unique features that were perhaps partially responsible for showcasing the institution : an air-conditioned auditorium with nearly 600 seating capacity, a parquet indoor badminton court and a community hall..

In the annals of the history of education in Mumbai, the name of K. M. Kundnani, the first founder Principal is inscribed in golden letters. Not only did he set up K.C. College, but acted as a key catalyst for steering the expansion policy of the educational institutions of the H.S.N.C.B. Over and above this, he played a stellar role in influencing the educational decision-making bodies of the University of Bombay. During his long and illustrious career that spanned approximately four decades, he was able to take the institution from its infant status to that of a recognized provider of quality education. Principal Kundnani headed the institution till 1992. His end came, as he desired, with his boots on.

K.C. fulfils a unique role of catering to all strata of students-the achievers, first generation learners, women students from minority groups as well as the challenged learners. Catering to such diversity, the institution also acquires multiple roles, from providing quality education, to remedial learning, to maximisation of student potential and welfare.

Admission to K.C. College is a significant milestone towards the future for any student. Every year the number of applicants far exceeds that of available seats. Most of the students are high achievers, keen to get into professional colleges for medicine and engineering. They opt for K.C. because of the dynamism of its faculty and the proven track record of excellent results every year.

The Institution was reaccredited A grading by NAAC.

The H(S)NC Board cannot express in mere words its immense gratitude towards its founding fathers Prof K.M Kundnani and Barrister Hotchand Advani. After the passing away of the founding fathers of the Board, Barrister Hotchand Advani and Prof K.M Kundnani, there were others to succeed them.

A renowned surgeon, philanthropist and pioneer, Dr L.H Hiranandani is the Patron Trustee of the H(S)NC Board. He symbolises the resilient and visionary spirit of not only the Board but of all the Sindhis who came as refugees during partition and built themselves up as a thriving business community in the country. A celebrated ENT surgeon, Dr Hiranadani has devised many breakthrough treatments in the field of medicine. He is indefatigable and is constantly encouraging all the students and staff of the H(S)NC Board to continue forward with determination and commitment. A nonagenarian, his energy and spirit put even the young generation to shame. He was awarded the prestigious Padmashree by the President, Mr V.V Giri. He is actively involved in the Board’s charitable work and educational ventures. He is a source of strength and inspiration to all.

The Present President of the Board is another such a dynamic personality, Mr. Kishu Mansukhani. He has spawned a new direction in educational leadership with great earnestness and zeal. Mr. Mansukhani brings the same focused and detailed vision to the working of the Board. He is actively involved in all the Board’s educational, social and humanitarian activities. He is a trustee of various charitable organisations and is also associated with Sadhu Vaswani Mission.

Mr Anil Harish was till recently the President of the H(S)NC Board. A soft-spoken, unassuming personality, he steers the activities of the Board with great vision and foresight. He is one of the leading legal experts in the country. All the member institutions of the Board look up to him for his ever-ready support and guidance. In spite of his busy routine, he always makes time for the activities of the Board’s institutions and is always there to lend his charming support to all.

A new era commenced with Mr. Niranjan Hiranandani becoming the President of the H.(S).N.C. Board in the year 2003. An illustrious son of an illustrious father, Mr. Hiranandani proved that he was a builder par excellence as he left no stone unturned to see that the H.(S).N.C. Board marched ahead on its journey of education under his able guidance and encouragement, each of the premier institutions of the board has grown, developed and become a prestigious name to be reckoned with.

The present Secretary of the Board, Ms Manju Nichani, is the Principal of K.C College. Ms Nichani has shown the same zeal in taking the affairs of the Board forward as she has shown in leading K.C College to be one of the premier institutions of Mumbai. Enthusiastic, energetic, and well aware of the working dynamics of the institution, her appointment triggered off a number of significant changes that augured well for the Board and the institution. These changes were academic, administrative as well as structural. With her vision and pragmatic approach the H(S)NC Board continues to scale greater heights.

Prof J.K Bhambhani had earlier been the Principal of K C College and on his retirement from that post, he took over as the Rector & Secretary of the Board. Today he continues to act as the Rector of the Board.

The approach that the Management adopts towards the staff is one of caring support. A holiday home is maintained in Lonavala for the recreational use of the faculty members, students and their families. New infrastructure has been created to house international visitors and other guests. Three guesthouses are being maintained in the city for the use of visiting students and faculty from international colleges who reside for a week or two taking guest lectures or students who spend a semester in Mumbai attending lectures or pursuing research.

Presently the Board is looking seriously into the modernisation, consolidation and expansion of its programmes. Educationists, education administrators and management experts form an advisory team who advise the Board and have drawn up vision 2020.
